Disabled protest government neglect in Taraba

People living with disabilities in the Taraba State have protested the alleged neglect by government.

They believe government is overlooking them for employment.

These members of the community, including the blinds, cripples and the deaf, converged at the premises of the Jalingo motel opposite the residence of the State Acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, in the state capital, chanting solidarity songs.

They accused the state government of relegating them to the background in spite of their educational qualifications.

The spokesman of the protestors, Aliyu Mohammed told journalists despite the members' educational qualifications, they had spent many years without employment.

"These people have remained law-abiding, refusing to engage in street begging and other vices that would spoil the good image of the state and the country at large. In spite of all these sacrifices, the government has not deemed it fit to extend hands of friendship to them," Mohammed said.

"It is sad that persons living with disabilities in the state have not being given the opportunity to participate in the ongoing recruitment in the various departments of the civil service within the state."

He said out of the 3 980 persons that were being recruited in various fields, none of the disabled members were invited for interviews.

Mohammed said persons with disabilities must be given employment because they are the most vulnerable people in this country.

"We are not interested in political position. All what we need from the government is employment so that we can be able to fend for ourselves and our families.
Some of us have degrees in various fields of endeavors but when it comes to employment we are not considered."
