Suspected assassins reportedly shot several times at Okeke's car by the gate of his Onitsha GRA residence as his driver returned from an errand. But he was not in the car at the time.
The attempt came bare two days after the police killed six kidnap suspects at Azia in Ihiala Local Government Area.
The Anambra state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, confirmed the story and said the police were on the trail of the suspects.
Okeke told reporters that he had just got into his residence 10 minutes before the hoodlums struck.
He said soon after he came home, he sent out his driver on an errand with the car.
He explained that a group of gunmen, operating in a carton colour Siena, trailed the driver to the GRA gate II of his home and opened fire on the vehicle.
He said, "The assailants trailed the car; thinking that I was inside, they first opened fire at the windscreen, directing it to the front seat where they thought a security man was sitting. They shattered the windscreen and shot again at the driver. The bullets miraculously missed his forehead, scratching it before hitting his hand.
"They also shot at the tyres of the vehicle and riddled the whole vehicle with over 60 bullets. The operation was a short one; it lasted for about five minutes. The assailants came purposely to eliminate me because within the last few months, I have been receiving threats from various criminal gangs, ordering me to leave Onitsha and Anambra State completely.
"They probably thought I was inside the car because when they forced the door open, they were asking, 'where is Oga?' before they left."
He commended the effort of the security agencies in the state especially in Onitsha, calling on the federal and state governments to motivate the security operatives to enable the army, police and local vigilance group to continue working towards reducing the high crime rate in the state.
