Ngige denies complicity in Uke stampede

The Ngige Campaign Organisation has asked Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State and the All Progressives Grand Alliance to seek God's forgiveness over the incident that led to the death of more than 25 people at a prayer ground at Uke area of the state on Saturday.

The Director-General of the Ngige Campaign Organisation, Chief George Muoghalu, said this on Monday while reacting to accusation by the APGA and the Anambra State Government that the stampede was caused by Ngige's supporters.

Muoghalu said the indiscretion of Obi and the campaign team of the APGA governorship candidate who stormed the prayer ground to campaign was responsible for the stampede.

He said, "The statement credited to the Anambra State Government that the stampede was caused by supporters of Ngige should be disregarded as a tissue of lies.

"One thing stands out which can never be dimmed by any desperate campaign is that this tragedy could have been avoided if the APGA campaign train did not visit the adoration ground at such an ungodly hour to campaign for votes; better still, if the governor had heeded the protests of the congregants not to turn their prayer ground to a campaign rally.

"We gathered that it was the booing of Governor Peter Obi that angered the security personnel to charge at the crowd when the governor made his way out of the prayer ground (the governor had insisted that he left the arena three hours before the stampede occurred).

"The governor should not hold Ngige responsible for his growing unpopularity and how the people choose to react to him whenever he appears in the public."

He further said the effort to heap the blame on supporters of Ngige was "another cheap and desperate effort to cover up the heinous crime committed against fellow Anambrarians."

He said the allegations by APGA was aimed at smearing the reputation of Ngige, who is the candidate of All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming election. "This brazen attempt by Governor Obi has failed and will continue to fail," he said.
